Diabetic camps for children

        DIABETIC CAMPS FOR CHILDREN

Children with diabetes attend camps for a number of reasons
Annual holiday camps for children with diabetes are now established in most parts of the world. Although there may be varying objectives from one camp to another, there are certain important reasons why we arrange such camps. They are as follows:
To have fun with other children
1. To children with diabetes the opportunity of attending a holiday camp. As many camps may not take children with diabetes, who are not fully independent, this may be their only opportunity for a camp with other children of their own age. Camps are a good social experience and help children develop.
To learn self-reliance
2. To give children an opportunity to develop independence and self-reliance. Children who depend a lot on their parents for diabetic control have an opportunity to learn how to look after themselves.
3. To teach children how to give their own injections and judge their own diet.
To meet other children with similar problems
4. To allow children to meet other children with diabetes and find out how they cope with their problems. Country children especially find it helpful to realize that they are not the only children with this problem. Many camps invite older children with diabetes as leaders. This gives the younger children someone who also has diabetes to look up to and follow. It also gives the older children a sense of responsibility.
To develop a positive attitude to their diabetes
5. Many children feel bad about their diabetes. When they are having fun with others who also have diabetes they may feel much better about diet, insulin injections and blood tests.
To give parents a break
6. To give parents a rest from the constant day to day care and responsibility of diabetes.
To review the state of the diabetes
7. To give the child's doctor an opportunity to check on diabetic control and, when necessary, re-stabilize diabetes without the child having to come into hospital.
Camps for children with diabetes are good fun
Camps are basically good fun and enjoyable. It is in such conditions that children are likely to be most receptive to opportunities to learn more about diabetes, to take part in discussions, to help others and to develop self-reliance.
