Immune for life: super foods versus the s.a.d. IMMUNE FOR LIFE: SUPER FOODS VERSUS THE S.A.D.
The Standard American Diet is sad indeed:
Fat: About 45% of our calories come from fat.
Protein: About 20% of our calories come from protein.
Carbohydrates: About 35% of our calories come from carbohydrates.
Refined
Carbohydrates: 50% or more of the calories from carbohydrates come from refined carbohydrates.
Processed
Foods: 75% or more of our total food intake is processed. Cholesterol: 600 to 1,000 mg. a day. Salt: 6,000 to 15,000 mg. a day.
Additives: Lots. Caffeine: Too much.
Compare this to the Super Food diet I've devised, which emphasizes the foods that give your "doctor within" a boost: fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, plus small amounts of low-fat fish, poultry, dairy products, nuts and seeds.
Fat: About 20% of the calories come from fat.
Protein: About 10% of the calories come from protein.
Carbohydrates: About 70% of the calories come from carbohydrates.
Complex
Carbohydrates: Almost all of the carbohydrates are complex (little or no refined carbohydrates).
Processed
Foods: Less than 10% of our total food intake is processed.
Cholesterol: Less than 300 mg. a day. Salt: 300-500 mg. a day.
Additives: As few as possible. Caffeine: None.
As you can see, the Super Food diet derives most of its calories from CCs, which are the best source of fuel for your body. The excess fat, protein and cholesterol, so strongly associated with many diseases, have been eliminated. Processed foods are also avoided. Of the multitude of processed foods in the typical supermarket, most are nothing more than fanciful combinations of fat, sugar, refined carbohydrates and various additives. These so-called foods are nothing more than packaged, potential disease.
